Bunnies and bonnets (again)

Yep, I know what you’re thinking – I’m really getting some mileage out of this bunny image. But bear with me, because actually the results of creating the same image using different materials are often quite surprising. The very distinctive character or quality that a work assumes, or indeed the power of materials to transform a work, is really apparent when you compare a work painted from an image with one made from the same image using lead pencil. While a pencil drawing appears almost like a trace or shadow of its referent (in this case a found photograph), an image translated into paint really does become something new. It’s kind of like a born again christian, or maybe it’s more like a zombie? Well certainly it is like breathing life into a dead image, so really it’s not a stretch of imagination to describe the figures in my work as the walking dead. Particularly when one of the figures is an over-sized rabbit.
